Blisslogs Update

Just a short note to fill you in.  Yes, the them has changed again. The Chrome inspired theme just didn’t feel right so I changed it up again. Not sure if this will be my final design for a while, but I’ll let it be for a couple weeks and decide then how I feel about it. I know my last post stated that I was deploying a new site; that hasn’t changed, I just haven’t had the time to do some of the development I want to do before I officially launch.  I say “officially” because the site is out there, but with very little content. I will say that it will be a site that I hope many bloggers aspire to be a part of. That’s all for now, talk to you all soon.

Launching a new site soon

So I will be launching a new site soon.  It’s not quite ready for prime time yet but it is getting close. I’ve got to create a couple images and modify the copy yet. Since I am a complete photoshop noob, it may take me quite a while to complete the images. That and I have a complete lack of artistic talent. Also, still to be decided is how many ads I place on the site initially. I’ll probably be safe with one adsense banner, but I don’t think I’ll do any more than that at launch.

The new site will hopefully launch within a week or 2 so keep an eye out for it.  I’ll post here linking to it when it is done.

Google Chrome WordPress Theme

Well, I’ve chosen the Google Chrome WordPress theme to run this blog for a while.  I’ve been using this browser quite a bit lately and have grown quite fond of it. It will take me a while to get used to only having 1 side bar, but I like the clean look of this theme. I’m sure I’ll be playing with the location of the widgets I use until I get it just right. Sometimes I wish I had a more creative mind so I could design something original.  As it is, I’m sure I could make something original; but pleasing on the eye and functional it would not be. I’m open to any design recommendations, so let me hear them.

Looking for a New WordPress Theme

While this Blogs Theme has worked well for me while I was primarily blogging about blogging, my recent change in focus is making me rethink my theme. Let me know if you have any recommendations. There is something you should know before recommending a theme though; I am cheap.  I am only interested in free themes. I don’t want anything too cluttered or too boring or too vibrant. That’s not being too picky is it? I’m in no hurry to make the change either but I’m sure changes will be coming in the next week or two. I’m finding that I’ll do pretty much anything to pass the time and get my mind off of my pending divorce. Heck, I’ve even started reading the Bible. For those of you that know me; yes, you read that right. Me, the atheist/agnostic, is reading the Bible. Wow, how did I get on that topic.  This post was only meant to warn you that a design refresh will be coming soon. That’s all for now, but seriously, send me your free WordPress theme recommendations.

New to Twitter

So I broke down and joined Twitter yesterday. It had been getting so much attention the past few days, what with the competition between Ashton Kutcher and CNN to see who gets to 1,000,000 followers first. Since Ashton won, I decided to follow him. I’m still not sure I get what all the fuss is about, but it is something to get my mind off my personal life so what the heck.  You’ll notice I placed a new widget on the far right side so you can follow me just by visiting this sight. I’m interested to hear how everyone else is using Twitter.  Please post comments to this post giving me ideas. I’ve only done 4 Tweets so far, but would like to incorporate more into my daily routine.

BlissLogs is no longer a blog about your blog blog.

I’m about to break the number 1 rule in a blog about blogging website.  I’m telling you that this is no longer a blog about blogging. I’d like to get back in the habit of blogging again, but am not motivated to continue in that crowded niche.

From now on, BlissLogs will be my personal blog to cover whatever topic I’m in the mood to blog about. Who knows what my frequency will be or where this will take me.  Now I say this is my personal blog, but I will not be blogging about my personal personal stuff (i.e. divorce); that, I will leave to my blog dedicated to that sort of thing (which I am removing my link to today). I’m curious how low my RSS subscription count will dip after this post.:?:

What’s in a Name? — Google Chrome

Google screwed up with Chrome. Don’t believe me?  Read on.

I was curious as to why Google named their browser chrome so I “Googled” it. You know what I found? One article that briefly mentions that Chrome was a failed project at Microsoft years ago. I did find a comic book that they created to introduce you to Google Chrome; but nothing else about why that name. Now you’re probably saying to yourself, “Self, what does Googling to find out why they named their browser Chrome have to do with screwing it up?” I’m glad you asked.

When Google first launched many moons ago, nobody new what Google meant; but that’s just the thing. Google wasn’t anything. It was made up. Larry and Sergey wanted to change the way searches were done on the Internet and what they ended up with has become synonymous with web searches. Currently, “I’m going to browse the web” is a very common phrase. I doubt that we will be switching to “I’m going to Chrome the web” anytime soon. This is where Google screwed up.  They picked a name to kinda stick it to Microsoft when they should have continued their forward thinking and create a brand of their own. This is the first sign that Google is getting a big head. It appears that they think that they can do whatever they want and dominate that web space. When Chrome fizzles out and becomes a bust (and yes, it will fail), Google will have noone to blame but themselves.

Blogging from an iPod

Now that the itunes store has made apps available for the ipod touch and iphone, blogging went to palm of my hand. I’m writing this post from my touch. The wordpress app allows me to connect to many blogs to edit or compose new posts. While the app is easy to use, I recommend only using it to edit existing posts. At least until a portable keyboard make typing easier. Another downside to using this app is that I can’t use hyperlinks.(or I haven’t figured out how yet. Has anyone else tried using this app or another way to blog from your iPod?

15 Steps to a Useful Blog

I’ve posted on How to Start a Successful Blog in 50 steps with some legitimate steps along with some attempts at humor. It is now probably time to give you some vital steps to making a useful blog. Before I begin the list, here are a couple assumptions.

  • You know what the blog will be about.
  • The blog will utilize WordPress as its blogging engine and WordPress is already installed.
  • You would like visitors to your site.

This list is by no means comprehensive and certain steps can be eliminated or modified to fit your preferences. While this list is numbered, it is not sequential and can be completed in any order you like.

  1. Choose a WordPress Theme that fits your blog topic. (Don’t choose a cartoon theme if you are blogging about brain surgery)
  2. Create an account on Feedburner and burn the feed for your blog. Whenever you provide a link on your site to subscribe to your feed, use the feedburner link.
  3. Install and configure the Feedburner FeedSmith plugin. he plugin will detect all ways to access your feed (e.g. http://www.yoursite.com/feed/ or http://www.yoursite.com/wp-rss2.php, etc.), and redirect them to your FeedBurner feed so you can track every possible subscriber. It will forward for your main posts feed, and optionally your main comments feed as well.
  4. Install and configure the Google XML Sitemaps plugin.
  5. Register your site within Google Webmaster Tools. Be sure to go to the tools tab and choose “Set preferred domain.” I recommend making your preferred domain be www.domainname.com. Now, Google views http://BlissLogs.com as the exact same site as http://www.blisslogs.com.
  6. Ensure that you have the latest version of the akismet plugin enabled. You don’t want any comment spam do you?
  7. Install the All in One SEO Pack plugin and use its features for all your future posts.
  8. To get some stats on your site, visit Google Analytics to create an account and register your site. When you get to the point of adding code to your site skip to step 9.
  9. Install the Google Analyticator plugin and add your Google Analytics UID to the options page.
  10. Now for a couple plugins that will make use of widgets to add content to your sidebar(s). Install the Popularity Contest plugin to rank your posts based on comments, linkbacks, pingbacks, etc.
  11. To make use of the Popularity Contest plugin in widget form, get the JAW Popular Posts Widget.
  12. Why not try to make a little money from your site? Create a Google Adsense account and skip to the next step to add the code to your site.
  13. Use the Adsense Manager plugin to add Google ads to your sidebar as a widget or with a simple tag within a post. This plugin makes adding ads to your site easy enough that anyone can do it.
  14. Once you get someone to read your post and comment on it, you want a way to get them to come back. The Subscribe to Comments plugin will allow them to subscribe and receive an email when anyone else comments on that same post.
  15. If a reader likes what they have just read, why not direct them to other related posts. The Yet Another Related Posts Plugin determines like posts and will list them on the bottom of each post. It may take a couple days and quite a few posts for this to become accurate so be patient. I like this plugin because it does not rely on you entering tags to each post but will automatically scan each post to determine their matching threshold.

There it is, 15 steps for making a useful blog. Do you have some steps that you would add, change or remove? Let me know about them so we all learn something new.

Making Money with Pepperjam

With Jason being busy to post, I requested to be a guest poster, hoping to pick things up a bit around here. I’ve been reading Blisslogs for a long time and I hope you decide to continue to.

My first article will be about Making Money with Pepperjam. Pepperjam has had a big impact on the blogosphere, many bloggers are promoting them and their affiliates. Through my own promotion I’ve made about $65.

Affiliates for Bloggers

Sometimes affiliate programs forget about us bloggers. Most of us can’t promote certain offers like free stuff with participation offers. Pepperjam hasn’t forgotten us, offering affiliates like ReviewMe, Text-Link-Ads and SEOmoz.

Why Choose Pepperjam?

There are tons of affiliate programs to join and promote, but Pepperjam has done a good job in setting themselves apart.

Their affiliate support is amazing. Several inquiries that I have had were handled within 1-2 days. You can also instant message them directly with their own IM system. They are very receptive to feedback and criticism, I actually enjoyed talking with them.

You can also run “pepperjam ads”. These are similar to Google Adsense, however you are promoting your affiliates. You can add whichever affiliates you want to be rotated. For Blog about your Blog I have several related internet/blogging affiliates on my pepperjam ads.

Maybe the best of all, is that you get paid bi-monthly. On the first and 15th of every month if you have commissions you will get paid! How nice is that?

Have you joined Pepperjam yet?
